Gord Johnston was appointed as the permanent Chief Executive Officer for Assisted Living Alberta as of Aug. 1, 2025.
Gord’s more than three-decade long career in public service spans across different levels of government and regional service delivery systems. His experience within the Government of Alberta includes roles as Chief Strategy Officer for the Human Services Ministry, and Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), for Child and Family Services and ADM for Advanced Education.
Before joining Assisted Living Alberta, Gord spent close to four years as Chief Executive Officer at Civida, the largest provider of community and affordable housing in northern Alberta. Believing in investing in people is the key to success, Civida was nationally recognized for its corporate culture following a large-scale organizational transformation which resulted in greater availability of affordable homes, housing supports, and significantly increased customer satisfaction.
Prior to that, he served in an executive leadership role responsible for community-based service delivery in a large municipality in Alberta. His experience also includes Chief Executive Officer roles with four different board-governed Child and Family Services authorities in Alberta, the largest of which was the Edmonton Region. Early in his leadership career, Gord was also the CEO of a regional health organization in Saskatchewan.
He holds two master’s degrees; one in Speech Language Pathology and the other in Health Services Administration. Gord previously was a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association, Boys and Girls Club of Strathcona County, e4c (including two years as Chair), and The United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.
Born and raised in a small town in Saskatchewan, Gord believes in getting back to basics through customer centric service delivery, helping others, and collectively building strong and resilient communities where individuals and families can grow and thrive.
In 2022, Gord received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal and in 2025 the King Charles III Coronation Medal, both in recognition of his contributions to the province of Alberta. He continues to focus on helping Albertans through a collaborative and inclusive approach and supporting families and individuals in need.
